Best vegetarian dishes in Sai Kung
Local vegetarians recommend the best meat-free dishes in town.
Cru
Chosen by Helen Brighton, a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 30 years, meaning she eats dairy and eggs. (“I was fed rabbit pie while my pet bunny looked on, what would you do?”)
Best dish: The veggie burger with haloumi cheese and roast vegetables.
Best bit: The friendly staff and lots of really fresh vegetables.
Bookings: 18 Wan King Path, 2791 1792
I wish Sai Kung had... “more vegetarian dishes on the kids’ menus, and cheaper restaurants that can accommodate veggies. And I wish Woodlands southern Indian restaurant would open here.”
Sauce
Also chosen by Helen Brighton.
Best dish: Roast vegetables and feta cheese on ciabatta.
Best bit: It’s ultra dog-friendly, with water bowls and doggie treats available, and owner Claire :)
Bookings: 9 Sha Tsui Path, Sai Kung, 2791 2348
I wish Sai Kung had... “more restaurants that could guarantee they don’t use chicken powder in their dishes, I’m never sure.”
Jaspas
Chosen by June Trevisan who has been a vegetarian since 1980, and is now vegan (“generally”) and eats mainly raw food.
Best dish: Cobb salad “minus the chicken! I ask for avocado and mango instead.” It is a dinner salad, satisfying enough for a main course.
Best bit: Flexibility for vegetarians to amend any dish on the menu to make it “veggie friendly”. Easy, relaxed attitude of the staff to changes, which makes Jaspas a veggie's haven!
Bookings: 13 Sha Tsui Path, 2792 6388.
I wish Sai Kung had... “fewer cheap fast-food outlets that attract kids and expose them to junk food at a young age. This is a very difficult habit to break. I would like to see more trendy healthy options, for example a raw food cafe such as Life, Mix or Kosmo.”
Loaf On
Chosen by Sera Jensen, a “semi-vegetarian” for eight years (“I eat dairy occasionally and fish occasionally”).
Best dish: Steamed tofu and bamboo, deep-fried tofu and the steamed eggplant.
Best bit: Great food, plus a good atmosphere and good service.
Bookings: 49 See Cheung St., Sai Kung, 2792 9966.
I wish Sai Kung had... “vegetarian protein options for breakfast! Scrambled tofu instead of eggs. More non-dairy vegetarian options, and more interesting ingredients – beetroot, sweet potato, parsnip, leek, zucchini, artichoke, french beans, edamame/fresh soy beans, truffle oil.”
