Dear Sai Kung Mum,
Where can I find good quality organic/natural products for my baby?
Mother Nature

Dear Sai Kung Mum,
Where can I find good quality organic/natural products for my baby?
Mother Nature

Many companies have jumped onto the “organic” bandwagon, but some are less scrupulous than others about sourcing their products. Do your research before you buy – and read the labels – to make sure you get what you pay for. One trusted brand is Organic Family, which has  GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) approval on all its products, which are made of the finest organic, environmentally friendly materials and dyes. It’s stocked locally at Babushka (Shop 12, 66 Yi Chun Street, 2791 9070) and online at www.organicfamily.com.hk. For organic produce, try Chung Heng Organic Shop on Man Ning Street, which also sells organic toiletries, baby wipes and diapers. And try the Green Earth Society (37 See Cheung Street, 2792 0106) for everything organic from baby blankets to children’s toothpaste.

Dear Sai Kung Mum,

Where can I find children’s sunglasses with proper UV protection?

Shady Lady

Any sunglasses that offer UVA and UVB protection will protect children's eyes. A popular brand is Banz, which comes in a range of sizes and a rainbow of fun colours, with a secure strap that fixes around your little one’s head to hold the glasses comfortably in place. Three ranges are available – Baby Banz (for kids aged 0-2), Kidz Banz (ages 2-5) and J Banz (ages 4-10) – at Bumps To Babes, www.bumpstobabes.com

Dear Sai Kung Mum,

Are 3D movies bad for my children’s eyes?

Eye’m Worried

There has been some speculation about this, but because 3-D movies are relatively new there hasn’t been a chance for research on long-term effects. The 3-D glasses provided by cinemas merely filter light and alter perception and are not considered harmful. Short-term side effects – irritation, tired eyes or headaches – are similar to adjusting to new glasses and are nothing serious. However, some specialists worry that 3-D movies may cause too much strain for very young children whose vision systems are still developing. Be cautious, but not fearful.

Dear Sai Kung Mum,
Much as we love going on boat trips, my children sometimes suffer from seasickness. Any tips?
Junk Judy
Junk trips are a great way to spend time with your kids, but motion sickness can ruin the fun. To make sure your kids don’t spend the day in a world of dizziness and pain, try these techniques.
1. Make sure they get plenty of sleep the night before; tiredness increases the likelihood of seasickness.
2. Don’t skip breakfast. Boating on an empty stomach can make you dizzy and possibly lead to headaches and nausea.
3. Avoid heavy, greasy or acidic foods – keep breakfast light and fresh.
4. Hydration, hydration, hydration! Make sure your children drink plenty of water.
5. Keep the kids on deck in the fresh air. Being in a cabin makes you more prone to seasickness.
