Seaside romance
Ask around Sai Kung and you’ll probably get the same answer. People live here because it’s green, it’s close to the sea and offers an exception from the common Hong Kong rule of vertical living in boxy apartments. One Sai Kung family spent two years sourcing all the right pieces and materials from around the world, before completing their 2,100 sqft puzzle to avoid just that.
Lined with palm trees, the 1,500 sqft garden borders the Clearwater Bay Country Park and is just a short walk over a bridge that takes you to the beach. A teak deck is ideal for barbecues while a grass patch creates a soft spot for sunbathing. Beautiful orchids bloom in the summer making the whole area a private tropical retreat.
A separate outdoor sitting area on the other side of the house overlooks a stream which, in heavy rain, becomes a small river. Studded with spotlights and lighthouse-shaped outdoor lamps, this area becomes a romantic little hideaway at night. Because two outdoor spaces just isn’t enough when there’s so much beauty around, there is a rooftop for balmy summer evenings, overlooking the sea and Sai Kung town.
The master en-suite shares a similar view to the rooftop which can be enjoyed from the cleverly designed boat-shaped bathtub.
With the glittering lights of Sai Kung town in the distance, who needs candles? And don’t feel bad about filling up the tub either - rooftop-mounted solar panels convert all that sunshine into hot water that is pumped throughout hot water throughout the house. With so much outdoor space and awe-inspiring views all around, it was only right that the interior complemented the home’s surroundings. With high ceilings and an open-plan design, this home feels wonderfully spacious. While beautifully finished honey wooden floors throughout the home add a warm touch, cool tempered glass windows and doors (custom made by a New Zealand company) can be folded from wall to wall on the first and second floors, opening the house completely to allow a sea breeze throughout.
Every detail has been carefully considered and finding top-quality products was of paramount importance. LG air conditioners with air cleaning functions were imported from Australia and designer lights are built in along the staircase which weaves through the entire house.“The state-of-the-art kitchen is one of a kind,” says the owner. “It took a lot of examples before the grey color was right.”
The spacious kitchen is lined with glossy Corian countertops and is fitted with all the basics plus extras including a wine fridge, draught beer machine and a large double-door fridge. A large plate of dark blue glass on the wall, which acts as a splashback also adds a sophisticated dash of color.
