Three legs good

Taking to the hills to raise money for worthy causes is a long-established tradition. In a twist on the usual format, charity Christian Action is holding a three-legged walk that involves pairs of people being strapped together for the route around the nine-hole executive golf course at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club.

Taking to the hills to raise money for worthy causes is a long-established tradition. In a twist on the usual format, charity Christian Action is holding a three-legged walk that involves pairs of people being strapped together for the route around the nine-hole executive golf course at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club.

As well as being a fun way to spend the morning, the charity is planning to raise money for the children’s homes it supports in China.

Meet 12-year-old Zhuo Ma, who lives in the Huangnan Children’s Home in Qinghai Province, northwestern China. At age two, she lost the use of her left hand in a fire that also burned her face. Until September, she quietly dealt with the difficulties of being one handed in a two-handed world: even simple tasks such as washing her hair, doing the dishes or getting dressed were a problem.

But life changed for Zhuo Ma when Christian Action arranged for her to travel to Hong Kong to undergo surgery at the Union Hospital. In a five-hour operation, doctors performed skin grafts on the scarring around her left eye and inserted a small steel plate in her left hand, restoring some of the functionality she had lost. Recovery was painful, but Zhuo Ma gritted her teeth and never complained. Instead she enjoyed the sea – a rare opportunity for a girl from landlocked Qinghai – from her temporary home with a friend of the charity in Sai Kung. Best of all, the previously self-conscious girl now regularly has a beautiful smile on her face.Untitled1

Zhuo Ma is not the only child in Qinghai who needs help. Christian Action co-manages several Qinghai children’s homes in co-operation with the Civil Affairs Department, offering safe haven to about 600 children.

To help support its work, join the Three-Legged Charity Walk – parents and children, friends, famili and colleagues are encouraged to team up and stride out to raise much-needed funds.

The event takes place at Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club on March 31, 9.30am-1pm. To take part, please enrol by February 29 at www.christian-action.org.hk or call 2716 8861 for enquiries.
